Announcing the #SwissTechSeries

Switzerland is usually known for its watches, chocolates, banks, quaint villages and breathtaking sceneries across lakes and mountains with world-famous ski resorts. Switzerland is often associated with precision, discretion, quietness, safety, and excellence. Nestled in the heart of Europe, Switzerland also has a long history of innovation and a deep involvement in the world of technology. Discover the Swiss companies shaping the world of tomorrow.

Why Swiss techs?

As a Swiss digital innovation and strategy agency, member of the Swiss Label, we are proud to take this opportunity to cover some of the most innovative companies in the country, showcase fellow innovative companies, and contribute to the radiance of Switzerland as a leading hub for technological innovation.

Switzerland has been ranked #1 in the Global Innovation Index in 2020, across multiple categories, including top country in Europe! 20 international organizations involved in overseeing and managing internet are based in Geneva. The EPFL and EPFZ universities are ranked year after year alongside MIT, Standford, Caltech, or Cambridge, producing the best engineers and leaders of tomorrow.

Furthermore, Switzerland is a fertile ground for innovation as it provides access to an active innovation ecosystem, including top talents coming out of universities, political and economic stability, an outstanding infrastructure and capitals to fund new ideas.

Famous Swiss Tech inventions

Many people know that Velcro was invented in Switzerland, as well as the obvious Swiss Army knife, or even Muesli; fewer know that Solar Impulse was imagined and led by Swiss inventor Bertrand Piccard, whose great-grandfather created the Trieste bathyscaphe which went down the Marianna trenches… But did you know that:

  • Internet was invented at the CERN in Geneva, in 1989, and since then Switzerland has played its part in the development of this technology which has transformed so many aspects of our lives.

  •  The Helvetica font was developed in 1957 by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann! Now leveraged across many variations, it is a standard within the san-serif fonts, used widely for its clean and crisp aspect.

  •  The computer mouseYes the one you might be holding in your hand right now – took shape at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne in the 1970s, and made smarter by René Sommer in 1985 through the integration of a micro-processor.

And we are just getting started! Stay tuned for more!
